Caboose

On a sunny, July Saturday in 2006 we attended an auction in the Tranquility area of northern Adams County, hoping to purchase a travel trailer at a reasonable price.  Little did we know that we would be the proud owners of a Norfolk and Western caboose before the day ended.  It was about this same time that we were refurbishing our vacation rental house and we were struck by the novel idea of restoring this caboose as an additional lodging facility.  As fate would have it, we were the lucky bidders.

In the days following, we made arrangements to have the faded red caboose moved from its current home in a soybean field, 29 miles down the road, through West Union, to its current parking place.

Then the research began.  We discovered that our Class CH caboose #518420 was built by the East End Shops of the Norfolk and Western Railway at Roanoke, Virginia in April, 1940, at a cost of $4,361.00.

Since its relocation we have cleaned out an accumulation of debris and stripped off all of the plywood that was covering the original interior walls of the caboose.  Restoration will be a long process, but eventually, this caboose will accommodate overnight visitors.
